As modern manufacturers are dealing with increasing volumes of material flows amid growth in industries, inappropriate planning of production facilities could easily result in wasteful non-value-added activities in their operations, thus leading to lower productivity. Systematic Layout Planning (SLP), a proven approach designed to optimally arrange factory floor, is well suited to a wide range of industries. It can help appropriately lower logistical costs tied to production processes and enhance equipment utilization, thereby enabling manufacturers to carry out various production activities in the most cost-effective fashion. In the case study, Company A applies the SLP approach to plan and design factory floor for acid regeneration plants on the basis of raw data collected, which fully factors in geographical conditions, staffing, production processes and requirements, safety and environmental protection requirements, etc. As such, the factory floor is designed to deliver desirable levels of safety, reliability and cost-effectiveness while allowing operators to optimally run their production facilities, which involves rationalization of transportation logistics, production automation that leaves as few operating personnel as possible, equilibrium in distribution of production capacity among various production processes, as well as enhanced utilization of materials and equipment.Upon the completion of designing, the Company typically uses modeling and simulation to test proposed designs, before submitting them to an expert panel for assessment and screening. Based on the experts’ recommendation, the best design proposal would then be identified with a view to ensuring high operating efficiency of the acid regeneration facility in question while meeting the facility operator’s demands for economic benefits, energy conservation and environmental protection.
