External thread whirling machine is kind of important equipment used to process large diameter and large thread pitch straight and tapered threads. In view of the domestic small and medium enterprises, the existing external thread whirling machine is mostly by the transformation from the traditional lathe. When producing various model productions, the operation environment is poor, large labor intensity and the machining efficiency is low, quality also depends on the workers operating level, various production parameters is not easy to manage. Therefore, research and development of control system for external thread whirling machine based on the traditional lathe has practical significance and social value in accordance with China’s national conditions suitable for small and medium enterprises, moreover, it provides reference significance for automated production in large pitch thread in other machinery industry.With the research of the traditional external thread whirling machine and the analysis of its mechanical structure, working principle and worker operation habits, the retrofit scheme is determined, the machining method is improved, and automated manufacturing process is designed. On this basis the overall scheme of the control system is determined. With the combination of PLC controller, upper computer, servo systems, sensors and the man-machine interface, high efficiency and easy operation processing of the automation whirling machine is realized.According to the overall plan and control requirements, the hardware and software of control system is designed. PLC controller, servo system, and sensors and other hardware of the control system are selected. According to the requirement of the selection results and the control object, the electrical system is designed including main circuit, control circuit and servo system circuit design, etc. PLC program is designed according to modular thought, which meets the control requirements and develops a new knife method for automated processing and the calculation program of the knife that human error can be eliminated to make feed Angle more accurate. PLC corresponds with touch screen and upper computer via two serial ports to change data. The PC software of control system is developed and designed to identify CAD drawings and establish the database of the different specifications product parameters by using C# programming language in the Windows system.NET platform.After transforming, the whirling machine is simple for operation, labor intensity is greatly reduced, interface is friendly, the CAD drawings can be quickly identified to transmit parameters efficiently to PLC and the human machine interface, and different parameters are saved in the database. All of these make production efficiency enhance greatly, and the new processing method also ensures good quality of products. At present, the device has been debugged, and it runs well in the enterprise.
