Large diameter steel pipe as the equipment commonly used in industrial production and operation, the measurement technology is a key technology on the control. Currently the equipment used to measure large diameter steel pipe profile has some limitations in the performance, the data obtained are not comprehensive enough, so optimizing the design of a new type of steel profile measuring system has practical significance. In this article, we give a complete large diameter steel pipe profile measuring system’s software and hardware design, simulation and error analysis.Firstly, according to the current domestic large diameter steel pipe contour measuring principle commonly used that was achieved by a lot of investigation, we propose a better way to reduce systematic errors. Compared with functional requirements to be achieved, we give the comprehensive design and show the components, roughly divided into four parts, namely measurement principle, formula, equipment selection and software design.Secondly, the PLC control system and electrical schematic measurement system was designed to achieve the communication between PLC and laser controlled by stepper motor, we give the algorithm of measuring pipe contour, and detailed description of the mechanical structure of the system and its functions can be achieved.Next, we focus on the design of the monitoring control system. We make detailed descriptions for the selection of the control module, the design of system software interface, the management rights to design, the establishment of databases, and the operation processes of the system. In addition, we design the diagnostic function for the communication between software and PLC control system, and the alarming function for the system. We also conclude the merits of the designed configuration monitoring system.Finally, we conduct an in-depth research on the error of the measurement system, according to the analysis for various factors of the errors. Large amount of data obtained through repeated trials prove that because of the high accuracy, high degree of automation and small error, the system designed has important practical significance.
