The casting mold is the key component of continuous casting machine. As one of the most important parameters of the casting mold, it’s taper affects the life of the casting mold and the quality of the continuous cast billet. Appropriate taper can not only improves the cooling effect of the casting mold, prevents the occurrence of breakout accident, but also prevents or reduces the longitudinal cracks, improves the quality of casting billet.Adopting the numerical simulation method, the solidification and shrinkage of700mm×1500mm of super-thick rectangle billet in the casting mold and the thermal expansion deformation of the mold copper plate is simulated with the finite analysis software ANSYS. Based on the shrinkage of continuous casting billet and the thermal expansion deformation of the mold copper plate, the taper of the mold copper plate is obtained.Firstly, a mathematical model of two-dimensional unsteady coupled thermal-mechanical analysis was established for super-thick rectangle billet in the casting mold. Using the ANSYS software and two-dimensional slice method, the solidification and shrinkage of the casting billet under different casting speeds and different models of corner were simulated to obtain the distribution of temperature, the growth of the billet shell and the shrinkage of the casting billet under different casting speeds and the distribution of temperature and the shrinkage of the corner of casting billet under different models of corner as the basic data of the taper design of the casting mold copper slab of the super-thick rectangle billet.Secondly, a mathematical model of three-dimensional steady coupled thermal-mechanical analysis was established for the casting mold copper plate of the super-thick rectangle billet. Using the ANSYS software, the temperature field of the casting mold copper plate under different casting speeds was simulated to gain its distribution.Using the calculation results of the temperature field, the coupled thermal-mechanical calculation was performed to obtain the expansion deformation ofthe casting mold copper plate under different casting speeds. Use the same way to obtain the distribution of temperature and the expansion deformation of the corner of the casting mold copper plate under different models of corner.Lastly, based on the shrinkage and deformation of the casting billet in the casting mold and the thermal deformation of the casting mold copper plate, the ideal taper curve of the casting mold copper plate under different casting speeds and different models of corner was obtained. The results indicate that the rectangle casting mold can well adapt to the casting billet shrinkage by using three taper on the narrow surface and wide surface and at the corner. Based on the simulation results the taper of700mm×1500mm of super-thick rectangle casting mold is determined.The methods and results of this study can provide reference for the design of the super-thick rectangle continuous casting mold.
