Transformer plays an important role in power system. It can not only reduce the loss of power system but also avoid the potential dangers due to the aging of the transformer by finding and replacing the aged transformer timely. Determining the concentration of furfural contained in the insulation oil of a transformer has been established as a method to evaluate the health status of the transformer. In this paper, we proposed an electrochemical method to make the detection. The mercury film electrode was used as the working electrode to detect the concentration of furfural contained in the transformer oil with differential pulse voltammetry(DPV). The results showed that the mercury film electrode had good response to furfural. The research mainly included the following several aspects:1. A mercury film modified GCE was prepared with the constant potential method. pH 9.26 NH3-NH4 Cl buffer solution with a concentration of 0.25 M was used as the supporting electrolyte to detect furfural with DPV. A reduction peak occurred at about-1.32 V in the cathodic scan. The limit of detection was estimated to be 0.05 μg g-1. Excellent linearity could be obtained in the range of 0 ~ 10 μg g-1.2. The method to detect furfural in oil phase was discussed. It is difficult to directly detect the furfural contained in the insulation oil due to the large viscosity of the oil. Furfural in the oil phase could be detected with the same method in the water phase after extracted to pH 9.26 NH3-NH4 Cl buffer solution. The limit of detection was estimated to be 0.03 μg g-1. Linearity could be obtained in the range of 0.1 ~ 10 μg g-1.3. The measure to test furfural in real insulation oil samples was studied.Real insulation oil samples were obtained from power transformer substations of Shuhua, Yudai, Foshan and Dongguan. These examples were tested with DPV after extraction. The concentrations of furfural in the samples of Yudai, Foshan and Doguan were very low, and detectable signal could not be observed with electrochemical method. Thus furfural with an equivalent concentration of 0.1ug g-1 was spiked to all oil samples. HPLC tests were also carried out for the same processed solutions to verify the accuracy of the electrochemical method. Results got from electrochemical method and HPLC were compared with each other. Very favorable agreement between the concentrations of furfural detected with electrochemical method and HPLC method was obtained.4. The conditions of Pt nanoparticles deposited on the surface of the poly-furfural film /GCE and poly-melamine film/GCE were studied. The poly-furfural film /GCE was obtained with cyclic voltammetry method. Then Pt nanoparticles were grown on the poly-furfural film /GCE. By changing the growning conditions, spherical and other shapes of nanoparticles could be obtained. The same method was used to get Pt nanoparticles growing on poly-melamine film/GCE. Polyhedron, leaf-like and spherical nanoparticles coud be obtained. These nanoparticles had catalysis for methanol with different degree.
