A series of NiCoB amorphous catalysts were prepared by chemical reduction method for liquid phase hydrogenation of furfural to furfural alcohol. The NiCoB catalysts were characterized using XRD, TEM, DSC, BET and XPS. The effects of the catalyst preparation conditions and reactive conditions on the liquid hydrogenation of furfural were investigated. The Ni CoB catalysts showed an amorphous structure and higher thermal stability and dispersions. The NiCoB-1.0 amorphous catalyst showed the highest catalytic activity when the Ni/Co mole ratio was 1:1. The conversion of furfural and selectivity of furfural alcohol reached 100 % and 98.2 %, respectively at a reaction temperature 393 K,reaction pressure 2.0 MPa, reaction time 4.0 h and catalyst dosage 1.0 g. The higher catalytic performance of NiCoB-1.0 amorphous catalyst is attributed to its highly dispersing Ni CoB particles, thermal stability, larger specific areas and electron transfer effect between Ni, Co and B.
