With the high-speed development of Chinese economy, especially in the secondhalf of twentieth century, tower crane is playing a more and more important role in theconstruction of high-rise buildings, bridge engineering and port projects. This brings therapid development of the tower crane manufacturing industry. At the same time, theaccidents caused by tower crane occur regularly in recent years. Worrying is that towercrane accidents are not only threatening works in construction sites, but also pedestrians.So, in order to work safer and more efficient, it is very important to develop a conditionmonitoring system (CMS) to acquire sufficient real-time information of tower crane.Firstly, this paper proposes the practical significance of building a monitoringsystem of tower crane’s safety. Based on research status of CMS, several coretechnologies of the real-time system are discussed, which contain GPRS technology,wireless transmission technology, LCD display technology and information acquisitiontechnology. Next, according to the policies and the actual needs of the monitoringsystem, the design program of this tower crane terminal is proposed.Secondly, under the premise of the designed scheme, details of the tower crane’shardware system which contains4parts are specific introduced. First part is dataacquisition subsystem which consists of temperature, height, amplitude, rotary angle,wind speed and weight sensor acquisition modules. Second part is control subsystemwhich is composed of signal processing, LCD, core processing, data processing andsynchronous clock modules. Third part is alarm subsystem which comprises sound-lightalarm and relay circuit. Fourth part is communication subsystem which is composed ofGPRS and wireless transmitting modules.Thirdly, with the C program language, the tower crane terminal applicationsoftware is developed under the Integrated Development Environment ADS1.2. And thetower crane terminal can friendly display on LCD, store data in the specific flash,communicate with the remote monitoring center and complete the sensor calibration,such as height, rotary angle and so on.Finally, the entire tower crane monitoring system is tested based on the design ofhardware system and software system. The result shows the tower crane monitoringsystem is more safety and reliable and can prevent and reduce the accidents.
