Tower crane has been widely used in construction sector for its operatingradius and can simultaneously achieve vertical translation and horizontal motion.Effectively improve the efficiency of production. But in the construction process,the accidents of casualties and equipments damage caused by improperoperation occur frequently, causing serious damage to society. Against theshortcomings exit in the traditional tower crane safety monitoring system, theARM high-speed processor is used as the core processor in this paper. With theuse of digital signal processing technology, sensor technology and GPRSwireless communication technology the system is capable of monitoring theworking status of the tower crane real-time. Audible and SMS alerts will betriggered once improper operation happened. Through the GPRS wirelessnetwork the working data will be transmitted to the remote monitoring platformto achieve the wireless monitoring.The main researches contents of this paper are as follows.(1) The overall program design. The overall design proposal and processwill be determined according to the environmental condition and functionalrequirements. The selection of central processor and solutions of datatelecommunication will be determined at the same time.(2) Design the tower crane monitoring terminal hardware and softwaresystem. The hardware and software design of the tower terminal are completedin this chapter. Hardware design mainly focuses on power-supply section,peripheral circuit portion of central processor and sensor signal sampling andprocessing section. Taking the harsh environmental conditions and interferencesinto account, digital filtering techniques and watchdog are added to softwaresystem.(3) Design of GPRS remote communication module. The power supply andswitch circuit of GPRS module is accomplished in this section. SIM card circuitis completed simultaneously. Detailed flowchart of the GPRS communicationsoftware and alarm messages software are given in this chapter.(4) Establish a remote tower crane monitoring and management platform.Visual Basic development tool is used to design host computer program. Thisprogram monitoring the status of GPRS module real-time and receives the tower crane’s working data. After the tower crane’s working data is received, it will besaved to the SQL Server database and uploaded to Web page by the hostcomputer program. At any networked computer terminal, the tower crane’sworking data can be read by monitoring and management center staff.(5) Prototype debugging. Finally, the prototype and sensors are mounted ontower crane to detect the reliability and stability online.
