The design process of civil aircraft includes safety assessment, of which Functional HazardAssessment is the first step. The goal in conducting the FHA is to identify each failure condition andfailure condition combination for severity classification. Classical method of Functional HazardAssessment is implemented by safety analysts through analysis of every possible functions, which notonly takes them numerous time and energy, but also has a problem of identifying functionaldependencies and the effects of multiple functional failure conditions. In this paper, current research results of Functional Hazard Assessment methods by foreignresearchers are summarized firstly. After our identifying several drawbacks of classical FunctionalHazard Assessment method, a new model-based Functional Hazard Assessment method is presented. We describe the modeling concept as well as the algorithm of the new method. This method solves theproblem and increases the efficiency of Functional Hazard Assessment process by integrating theflight failure occasion and functional dependencies as well as using the computer program to modelaircraft behavior. Finally, we use model-based Functional Hazard Assessment method to study thetake-off occasion as an example. The results are processed and analyzed to certify the validity andcommonality.
