With quick expansion of urban construction, urban waterlogging has occurred frequentlyand leaded to serious damage to lives and economy. These years, more and more hydrologicaland municipal institutes focus on study of urban waterlogging. The occurrence ofwaterlogging is closely relevant to discharging situation of urban drainage system. Therefore, building a hydraulic model of urban drainage network and modeling waterlogging are helpfulto know the detailed process of flooding and the deep reason to waterlogging. This paper clearly summarized the calculation principle of urban flooding, which basedon predecessors’ study. Meanwhile, this paper proposed approach to build the hydraulicmodel of drainage network and develop an easy way to calculate waterlogging depth. Themain results and conclusions are summarized as follow.(1)By expounding the basic frame and functions of SWMM, this paper talk about thereason to choose SWMM as the simulation model. Then, discuss the calculation theory ofeach module of SWMM, especial hydrodynamics theory of flow calculation in drainagenetwork.(2)By studying the features and of ArcGIS, advantages of building model based onArcGIS technology was proposed. A specific method to establish drainage system databaseand examine the validity of data is elaborated. Moreover, an approach based on the spatialanalyst tool of ArcGIS to achieve sub-catchment delineation and calculation of the underlyingsurface geographic feature was put out. These two method improve the accuracy andefficiency when build the hydraulic model.(3)Combining SWMM simulation capabilities with data processing capabilities ofArcGIS, idea of integrating this two software was presented. Then, this paper also elaboratedthe main technique of calling DLL of SWMM and ArcGIS Engine developer components.Considering defects of SWMM in showing the two-dimensional hydraulic characteristics onthe underlying surface, this paper developed a method to transform flood flow intowaterlogging depth on the ground. (4)Take Minzhi district in Shenzhen as the study area. A hydraulic drainage networkmodel was built and integrated in the Minzhi waterlogging warning system. Use measuredrainfall and designed storms in different return period to verified the model. Simulationresults can reflect the basic urban stormwater process in Minzhi. Meanwhile, flood pointlocation and submergence depth calculated in the warning system were congruent with thefield research. Through the application example, we could make the conclusion that ArcGISand SWMM based simulation of urban waterlogging with improved efficiency and simulationaccurancy.
