With the development of the theory of urban drainage system simulation and the improvement of the calculation methods, urban drainage system modeling has become an essential part of drainage system management. The applications of Geographical Information System (GIS) technology and the drainage network simulation technology are increasingly becoming indispensable in drainage network asset management and operation management. Establishing a drainage system computer model needs a large number of basic data. At the same time, with the improvement of functions of GIS, drainage geographic information system has gradually had the functions of visual expression and deeply analysis of drainage network simulation results.This paper presents the concepts and technical methods of the combination of drainage network geographic information system and hydraulic simulation system. Through the combination of ArcGis, a geographical information system, and SWMM, a simulation system, the functions of drainage network data management and drainage network system simulation function can be achieved under the same platform. Using this method, the time to establish a computer model can be greatly shortened, the accuracy of the hydraulic model can be improved, and it can also provide necessary technical support for the drainage network operation and management.By analyzing the data management model of ArcGis, an ArcGis data model named Geodatabase has been chosen to establish the drainage network geographical information system. Through analyzing the theory of drainage network simulation and the data demanding of SWMM system, the data needed to establish the drainage network model under ArcGis has been confirmed. Based on the above analysis, an overall framework to combine the ArcGis and SWMM has been advanced. This paper elaborates the method to establish the drainage network computer model using the combining mode and its technological advantages. By analyzing the existing problems of the network data in ZHJ city, data checking function has been achieved utilizing the second development based on ArcGis. The method and process of calculating subcatchment data using space analysis function of ArcGis has been expatiated, according to the subcatchment data demands. Finally, using this method, a model of an independent storm drainage network system in ZHJ city is established, and the feasibility and the practicability of this technical method have been illustrated by this case.Because of the lack of actual data, the hydraulic model of drainage network has not been calibrated, and the establishment of water quality model has not been involved in this paper. Future research should be done on these aspects.
