Urban traffic signal control system is an important way to improve the efficiency ofurban transport, as well as to solve the traffic congestion and to ensure traffic safety.However, the design of the signal phase and the signal timing plan is the core part of thetraffic signal control system. This paper has a deep research on the design of the signalphase and timing plan of the traffic intersection, based on the analysis urban trafficcharacteristics. The main research of this paper is as follows:Firstly, the research status of the scheme of traffic signal control and the controlmechanism and optimization methods of the current signal control system is analyzed basedon the historical development of the urban traffic signal control system.Secondly, For the relatively sparse traffic intersections in urban roads, the problemsexist in timing control schemes is analyzed, and then an optimized schemes of signal-phasetiming plan is put forward based on vehicle-driven and vehicle-group respectively, whileadopting the method based on the criterion of pessimism to solve the signal timing plan.Thirdly, a computer simulation system of the signal timing scheme based onvehicle-group is developed by using visual C++6.0development tools, and theperformance analysis is performed. The reduction of the average delay of the timing planbased on vehicle-group is verifiedFinally, the TCPN model of the urban arterial traffic signal control system is built byusing CPN tools. And a traffic signal coordination control system of two intersections isrealized, the changes of vehicle arrival time of each road with the phase difference werediscussed. And it is verified that the congestion could be prevent effectively by adjusting thecurrent lights status and controlling the access and release of vehicles.
