In recent years, urban underground spaces have been continuously developed and gradually become functional-diversified due to the lack of urban land resources and the massive construction of rail transport system. Grand underground complex system has been set up one by one in several cities all over China. The way that people follow in the underground spaces is different from which they are used to in the ground architectural spaces. The wayfinding and signage system becomes the important intermediary between humans and spaces as well as the public service facilities for human beings. This thesis is based on the humanized design concept combined with the principle of ergonomics, visional psychological, perceptual design. The research on the wayfinding and signage system of the urban underground complex in Shanghai as well as the successful cases of overseas underground wayfinding signage system has been conducted. Also, the related design projects of signage system have been studied to summarize key points and principles of a scientific and reasonable underground wayfinding and signage system with related designing plan. The study result is expected to be applied to the actual urban underground wayfinding and signage system, making the system more scientific, equitable and cultural, which is also hoped to enable people to use underground spaces in convenient and efficient ways.
