Agriculture and forest residues can be converted to liquid bio-oil by fast pyrolysis technology. The bio-oil product is a complex mixture of organic components with high oxygen content, in which some of the high molecular weight composition of organics and their contents have a certain impact on the characteristics of bio-oil. Formation of some high molecular weight organics are affected by the ingredients of raw materials and operational conditions of pyrolysis. In this paper, influences of particle size and reaction temperatures on composition of bio-oil have been investigated by experiments. In order to study the pyrolysis of biomass in detail, a pyrolysis fluidized bed reactor with feeding rate of1kg/h was designed and established, and after commissioning and installation, the improper parts were upgraded. Many experiments were performed under the same conditions in order to examine check the reliability of the process. The small discrepancy of the results showed high reliability of the experiments.Quartz sand was used as bed material in reactor, corn stalk powder with particle size of20-40mesh,40-60mesh,60-80mesh and80-120mesh and the temperatures of400℃,450℃,500℃and550℃were respectively used in the pyrolysis experiments. Within the experimental range, the influence of material particle size and reaction temperature on the composition of the pyrolysis bio-oil was obtained and the influence mechanism of the two primary working parameters was analyzed. The research results would provide a first-hand data for further study of directional regulation of bio-oil.Both particle size and reaction temperature in the reactor have significant influence on the composition of bio-oil. The reasonable selection of them can improve the component distribution of bio-oil and control the production of some important components in bio-oil. For example, the corn stalk powder of60-80mesh and the reaction temperature of500℃are favourable for the formation of phenolic compounds in the bio-oil; it has a higher content of esters in bio-oil with the particle size of20-40mesh compared with others; the content of levoglucosan and3-hydroxy-2-phenyl-2-acrylic acid in the bio-oil increase with the decrease of particle size.
