Firstly, considering the features of reservoir water-sediment joint operation, the multi-objective optimization operation model, which was established with objectives of flood control, profit, the ecology objective and sediment in multi-purpose reservoir, was simplified to be a two-objective optimization problem with maximum power generation and minimum sedimentation. And a calculation method was suggested with the improved multi-objective dynamic programming iteration algorithm, which can overcome the shortcomings of the multiple iterative calculation of the one-dimensional sediment mathematical model and can obtained the model’s Pareto optimal solutions quickly. Secondly, considering the complexity of the evaluation of reservoir water-sediment joint operation schemes and the limitation of the each single evaluation method, determining weights method and a combination evaluation method are put forward based on optimal objective which minimizes the sum of vectors angles. Finally, the model and method was verified of an engineering case of the Three Gorges Reservoir. The result shows that the improved multi-objective dynamic programming iteration algorithm can realize the organic integration of energy generation and sediment deposition calculation to obtain the Pareto optimal solutions of reservoir water-sediment joint optimal operation model. At the same time, it can be verified that the combination determining weights method and combination evaluation method based on minimum vectors angles sum is efficient. The research results can provide a theoretical reference for reservoir water-sediment joint optimization scheduling and the study of evaluation theory.
