Environmental crisis is a hot topic in today’s society. People are constantlytrapped in a vicious circle of “destruction first and protection second”, whichforces people to search for a solution to the crisis. In order to achieve theecological balance of the landscape environment, urban landscape designers havebegun to tend to recreate natural ecological landscape design. Although ithighlights the natural beauty, this design tendency ignores the important role oftraditional culture in the development of the society and results in themonotonousness and lack of cultural elements in landscape design, which causesa “culture loss” phenomenon in society. With the rapid development of China’surbanization, fusing cultural elements into landscape design has graduallybecome the mainstream trend in modern design. Landscape designers try to show,in their designs, the city’s unique traditional culture and the inseparablerelationship between man and nature. What’ more, mixing natural beauty andcultural beauty into design works, designers work hard to reproduce the civilizedlife style, folk culture and exceptional artistic creation in their design. For majorlangscapes, these attempts are vitally important.In recent years, as a famous historical and cultural city, Xi’an isendeavoring to transform into a world-renowned cultural city. Tang Paradise andQujiang Pool Relics Park and other scenic spots, designed with the concept of“Qujiang Model”, has improved urban environment significantly and exuded a“green, low carbon, environmental protection” landscape design concept, whichsignifies a new phase of city culture. As an iconic scenic spot with culturalelements in landscape design, Xi’an World Horticultural Exposition integratesregional and historical characteristics and shows a new perspective to therelationship between major landscape design and cultural elements in landscapedesign. For this reason and from this new perspective, this paper focuses on the relationship between the classical landscape design and cultural elements inorder to show the characteristics of Xi’an city landscape design.The research is supported by the national social science foundation artproject::Shaanxi major landscape planning and humanistic spirit. Concentratingon the combination of cultural elements and the landscape design of Xi’an WorldHorticultural Exposition, the innovative perspective in this paper is focused onXi’an city development under the influence of landscape design with culturalcharacteristics. On one hand, this paper applies a new theory, based on the fullunderstanding of landscape, traditional philosophy, humanism, ecological factorsand sustainable development. On the other hand, taking Xi’an WorldHorticultural Exposition as a case study, this paper innovatively analyzes itslandscape design with the three dimensional theory and emphasizes the necessityof cultural elements in landscape design. Furthermore, from the perspective ofXi’an World Horticultural Exposition effect in post-expo time, this paperdiscusses the influence and problems of Xi’an World Horticultural Exposition inthe sustainable development of the city, expecting to offer constructive help tolandscape design in the coming World Horticultural Expositions.
