Actually, urban economy has become the “Key” under the background ofglobalization. In order to improve urban competitiveness and regional influence, various cities extend the urban space and make the urban resources be integrated, taptheir own potential actively. To achieve this goal, the government used “Great CityEvent” to be a new means of urban development, and then to promote urbanexpansion. But what is “Great City Event”? This paper argues that it’s a platform ofcapital and political power acting on the city space.This paper research and analysis the dynamic changes of the city proper byusing ARCMAP software, summarizes the phenomenon of expansion of Nanning cityproper, and driving force analysis of Nanning urban sprawl. In order to establish thelogical relationship between urban sprawl under the background of “Great CityEvent” and different social roles’ interest orientation in the process of spaceproduction, the paper build a framework in the perspective of the governmentbehavior. From the perspective of both “Great City Event” and “Space production”,the paper research into the impetus factor of Nanning’s sprawl. Different fromprevious studies, this paper gives priority to the subjective reason of Nanning’s landexpansion.The conclusion of this paper has three points. Social and economicdevelopment is a surface driving force. Hosting “Great City Event” is driving force,the reason is that it promote the social and economic development. But when weresearch for the origin of “Great City Event”, we found that it’s a platform of capitaland political power acting on the city space. Actually,“Great City Event” is only anew means of “Space production”, the essence driving force of land expansion is theevolution of social space.
