While the urbanization is rapid in China, the urban traffic is under a great pressure because of the city expansion and the increase of traffic volume. Subway is becoming the backbone of urban transportation for its high speed, high capacity and many other advantages. In recent years, however, a high frequency of subway accidents indicates the vulnerability of subway operation. Therefore, it is worthwhile to study how to evaluate the vulnerability level of subway station operation in a scientific and rational approach.In the first place, we clarified the definition of subway operation vulnerability based on previous research and the security needs of urban subway operation, and elaborated the relationship between exposure, sensitivity and adaptability. Secondly, we identified the determinents of subway vulnerability by analyzing and summarizing the cause of historical domestic subway accidents and established a safety evaluation index system for Chinese subway station operation according to those determinents. The related index weight is calculated by a combination of Delphi method and AHP method. In addition, extension theory and extension evaluation method was employed to assess the urban subway operation vulnerability. Based on the extension method, we built a multi-level extensible evaluation model of subway station operation vulnerability by studying the basic concepts of matter-element theory, extension set and correlation function. Finally, we studied three cases of Beijing subway stations. The vulnerability level of the station and its subsystems were determined according our new method. The corresponding suggestions were proposed in order to avoid accidents in futrue subway operation. This new method provided a comprehensive evaluation of the subway operation vulnerability in China.Both theoretical analysis and case study indicate that the new method is applicable to subway operation vulnerability evaluation and this method contributes to further research of subway operation vulnerability evaluation in our country.
