The icing phenomenon of transmission line is prone to generate in lowtemperature and humid environment. Transmission line icing will cause power linedisconnection, fittings damage, insulator stings flashing ice, basic sink or tilt, andeven will cause towers collapsed, wire grounding accident, which threatens thenormal operation of the power system seriously and affects the normal production andlife of people. Therefore, enhancing the study of the transmission line ice thicknessmonitoring technology and mastering the icing situation of transmission line real-timehas important practical significance to ensure the safe and stable operation of powersystem.This paper presents a general design of the transmission line icing on-linemonitoring system. The tension sensors, angle sensors, industrial cameras,temperature and humidity sensors, wind speed and direction sensors are used tocollect field data, and through GPRS network and Internet network the data istransferred to the main station of power system monitoring and control center, at finalthe transmission line ice thickness is calculated by the relevant software. On the basisof the overall design, the choice principle of tension sensor, angle sensor, GPRStransmit modules and power is summarized and the specific selection program isgiven.For the core module of transmission line icing on-line monitoring system-powertransmission line ice thickness calculation module, this paper proposes a transmissionline ice thickness calculation model based on the mechanical. The model takes intoaccount the wind and no wind either case, and the transmission line ice thickness iscalculated by the basic characteristic parameters such as the axial tension of tensionwire segment and the tension and excursion angle of hang insulating string.Through simulation method the transmission line ice calculation model isvalidated in this paper. The aluminum is used to simulate the actual transmission line,and the small tension sensor and suspension rings are used to simulate insulator string.Transmission line ice is simulated by dough evenly. The test results of the individualsegment as well as stalls continuous conductor show that the transmission line icethickness calculation model proposed by this paper has a small calculation errorwhich can meet the requirement of accuracy.
