With the smart grid vigorously promoted, The traditional mode ofcommunication monitoring device cannot reach the networking and unifiedrequirements of State Grid information platform. So we need to further complete theupgrading of routine monitoring equipment communications of substation, also tosolve the problem of cannot communicate directly between conventional conditionmonitoring equipment or non-substation equipment and internal standard IEC61850substation monitoring system. In this paper, it gives a detailed description of the design of the conversionmethod between routine monitoring device MODBUS communication protocol andIEC61850, and proposes a design method of the conversion process from MODBUSprotocol to the IEC61850. It also conducts data modeling for MODBUS by usingobject oriented technology, and establishes the mapping relationships of messagesand service model among MODBUS,IEC61850and MMS on the basis ofhierarchical semantic peer principle. Combined with model-mapping protocolconversion and Linux-based embedded platform, it gives a project combines systemdesign, database design, and software structural design and so on of integratedmonitoring unit, and completes the conversion from MODBUS protocol to IEC61850on this platform. Finally, after establishing the corresponding mapping model of an intervalcontroller, using Qt and other related technologies achieve a comprehensivemonitoring unit prototype for the process communication services. The paper hascompleted its current literacy services such as measurement data, file transfer serviceand reads the directory service and so on. Verified herein protocol converter designis correctness and feasibility. This paper not only gives a method on the conversionissue between the IEC61850standard and MODBUS protocol, but also provides aguideline between other proprietary protocols and the IEC61850standard on theconversion issue. This is important implications for the further promotion of smartsubstation.
