The Research On The Glazed Roof-ridge Decorations Of Historic Building In The South Of Shanxi Province

There are multiple topics for decorations on the roof of Chinese historic buildings;it could be traced back to the iconic characteristics from the fairy tale. The essentialmaterial of roof decoration in Shanxi province is colored glaze. The colored glaze isattributed to Fetal lead-glazed pottery.The author joined the research project of the State Bureau of Cultural Relics todoing the survey for105historic buildings and take the Buddhism goodness “Guanyingtemple” in Huozhou In Linfen area and Zhongping Erxian Temple In Jincheng area forexamples that discussing the process of the replacement and conservation forcomponent of glaze Ridge and the influence for the restoration of glaze Ridge in resentyear.Through the problem of the case mentioned above, the author continueinvestigating the traditional manual craft of glazed works in Shanxi province formcollecting literatures, managing the traditional process of burning the glaze, visiting andrecording three old factories including many cases studies to make comparison of thedifference for traditional and modern skills.Besides the effect of manual craft of firing glazed works, for the recovery ofroof-ridge decoration, the placement in construction site is one of the most importantfactors. The author establish the completely restoration process for main guide andinvestigate the method of restoration and placement for roof decoration. To putemphasis on south Shanxi province, discussing the characteristics for glazed roof-ridgedecoration in historic buildings entirely and analyzing the changing of glaze decorationfor20years from the book” Glaze Works in Shanxi” published in1990.Through analyze and investigate the”authenticity” of roof-ridge decoration and itsmaterial, the author made comparison and introduce the value system of wholearchitecture with the literature study and fieldwork to conclude the importance ofconservation. Based on the data of this research, the traditional skill and the feature ofglaze decoration could be noticed.
