The development of smart grid makes it more vital to utilize the automation andintelligent for relay protection. The classic off-line relay protection coordination atpresent can’t adapt to the new situation. Thus, the study of online application for relayprotection is necessary to ensure the reliability, stability and security of relay protectionsystem and the operation of entire power grid. In this article, three aspects have beenstudied around the key technology of relay protection online application, includingtopology analysis of substation configuration, data matching for heterogeneousinformation system and result visualization technology. It mainly includes the followingtopics:A novel method of substation configuration has been proposed based on CIM andconnection nodes gathering. This method directly bases on the grid topology modelignoring the establishment of adjacency list, and hierarchically completes the internalnodes division and automatic numbering. Further, with adopting different handling fortracing the different changes of switches, it realizes local topology correction bysingle-terminal connectivity analysis, which distinctly helps improve online responsespeed.In the second topic, a data matching and validation method has been proposed basedon structure characteristics of power system. On the basis of traditional string matching,the topology structure is considered, which couples the various types of matching processand conveniently deals with complex conditions. On the other hand, the accuracy ofmatch result is well verified via grid structure, reducing the maintenance workload.For the last part, a result visualization system consisted of three progressivecategories has been designed for relay protection online verification system. Thisvisualization system establishes a balance among implementation of software function,human cognitive ability and discovery of information and knowledge, increases both readability and guidance of the results. With the coordination of words and graphics, andthe combination of2D and3D, it is conducive to information acquisition and judgmentand decision making for relay protection personnel.
