Outdoor activity space plays a key role in fostering children’s optimal physical andmental growth. Large tracts of land have been developed into residential lots due to swiftexpansion of real estate industry. Noticeably, space for children’s outdoor activity is the keymeasure for evaluating the quality and character of housing. This thesis takes a closer look atchildren’s outdoor play space design among the residential blocks in Pearl River Delta, andproves some referential value for the industry.Chapter One mainly analyzes foreign legislation and philosophy on kids’ outdoor playenvironment, in contrast with which, domestic research focuses on architectural planning. This comparison will hopefully show some valuable examples in this realm. Chapter Twodiscusses children’s behavioral and psychological characteristics in different age groups andreveals the features as well as the needs of outdoor activities, providing theoretical basis forour research and helping achieve a better design for each age group. Outdoor play area cannotbe independent from the whole landscape. Chapter Three analyzes the impact of differentenvironment elements upon children’s outdoor activities. The space design should take intoaccount the factors of landscape so as to take advantage of the favorable ones and avoidadverse ones. Chapter Four proposes the design principles and approaches based on theanalysis about existing problems and difficulties. Modular design is studied in terms of therequirements with respects to siting, zoning, layout, equipment selection, plant allocation, safety consideration, etc. This is the first time that modular design is mentioned for this realm, where the space is modularly designed according to different functions to meet some basicneeds. The thesis chooses Pearl River Delta as a typical example to showcase some of thedesirable designs for its prosperous economy and mature residential development. In ChapterFive, Phase Four of Times City residential project in Sanshui District in Foshan, right in PearlRiver Delta, is taken as an example in the thorough analysis and evaluation of the process andprinciples of the space design. Specific methods are proposed for space design, and theconcept of pan-space for children’s outdoor play is raised for the first time. Significance ishopefully to be demonstrated in this case study on current design review of kids’ outdoorplay space among Pearl River Delta residential blocks.
