The design of intake system and intake and exhaust valve timing has a greatinfluence on the cylinder’s gas exchange process, engine’s power, fuel consumption, emission performance and so on. In general, the intake system structure is designedprimarily to take advantage of the dynamic effect of the intake manifold to ensureadequate intake air cylinder, and makes cylinders’ intake uniformity is better, as well asfuel economy, power, torque, etc. The valve timing’s design is mainly through set thereasonable intake and exhaust timing angle to reduce the gas exchange losses, and thenmake sure the cylinder’s gas exchange process better. This article mainly uses acombination of simulation and experimental methods to study the structures affect theintake system and engine valve timing.First, we use the one-dimensional simulation software GT-POWER to establish themodel of the turbo-charged diesel engine, and then control the error between thesimulation results and experimental results to reasonable limits, making sure the model isavailable. We mainly do two aspects as follows, the study adopted single variable controlmethod, which is to ensure engine operating conditions and structural parametersunchanged, only changing one variable to study the its influence to the engine. The results showed that: the intake structure parameters such as manifold intakemanner, intake manifold length, diameter, resonance cavity volume have a great influenceon the intake uniformity. And except the intake manifold intake manner, the others alsohave a influence to volume efficiency of the engine, the power, torque, fuel consumptionobviously. The total angle on the inlet pipe of the engine has a little influence and can beignored. The angle of the intake and exhaust valve timing has a big influence on the gasexchange process (residual gas fraction), volumetric efficiency, fuel consumption rate, and little effect on the engine power, torque. These results will play a guiding role on design and development of the intakesystem and valve timing in future.
