The development and evolution of the electromagnetic railgun have been throughnearly one hundred years. The solutions of the key technologies make electromagneticrailgun become a reality in the practical world. The launch of electromagnetic railgun is aprocess of high-speed electrical sliding contact, to understand the effects and improve thepractical values, individual factor analysis is totally necessary. The application ranges andtechnical indexes of the electromagnetic railgun are different, their structural materials andlaunch process also have very big differences. Establishing an accurate simulation model isthe necessary premise and reliable guarantee to study electromagnetic railgun. In this paper, the electromagnetic railgun which is powered by GW level air-core pulse generator makesprojectile speed up to more than2km/s.The electromagnetic railgun is driven by the large pulse current power supply; itsworking process is analyzed. The high launching velocity can change the resistancegradient and current distribution in the rails and the armature, resulting in serious joulelosses. Air drag and sliding friction drag rapidly increases with the projectile speed, thedrag forces and energy losses are strong. Current waveform, rise time, amplitude and falltime of the power supply have great influences on the performance of the electromagneticrailgun system within a few milliseconds, so do the materials and structures of theelectromagnetic railgun. The circuit equation, motion equation and governing equation arebuilt.Electromagnetic railgun processing technology is complex, emission loss is big, andthe experimental expenses are very expensive, so the modeling analysis using the modernsimulation technology is very necessary and effective. Simulation model is established withthe Saber software. The related parameters which may affect the performances ofelectromagnetic railgun are quantitative analyzed and compared, which make the modelmore close to the fact. Electromagnetic railgun with the PA is simulated; the mutual effect between load and PA are found, which can make the design of PA more reasonable and theperformance of the system better.
