There are three serious city problems in contemporary China. On the one hand, many cities have lost their local characteristics because of the rapid development ofurbanization, blind pursuing high speed of constructing and rigid design method. On theother hand, over-exploration also caused bad effects on the natural landscape driven byindustrial interests. A large number of mountains became damaged as a result ofindustrial demand such as quarrying and mining. Furthermore, after buying land rightfrom government, real estate developers spread their residential areas wantonly tomaximize their selves-benefits, which resulting many unreasonable land planning. As adesigner, it is a big challenge to satisfy the requirements of substance’s function as wellas inherit historical cultural context, reveal local characters and respect to theenvironment. This thesis take Yangxian Lake Tourist Town Landscape Design as asample to investigate how to coordinate the principle of traditional culture, industrialheritage and environment protection with landscape developing based on an distinctivesite which is an abandoned quarry located at Jiangnan city that full of traditionalChinese culture; and then propose some possible ideas and reasonable methods tomodern regional landscape planning and design in the context of abandoned quarry site. This thesis is organized as follows: First, based on the site analysis which iscombined with “soil”,“water”,“forest”,“culture” as well as other natural and humanconditions, problems of original plan was summarized and then modification proposalwas given. In addition, deeper analyses of design problem according to prior planningproposal were made, such as geological safety, ecology protection, experience of tourand etc., and finally, a safety program was raised which both meets the requirements oftravel experience and the respect for nature and human environment. Moreover, guidedby the examination above,“pit-lake”(water accumulated in pit then forming lake) areawas chosen as a deeper design part, which balanced the travelling needs and the respectof site identify. This program kept site’s original character as much as possible. It triedto guide tourists find the deeper beauty beyond the site of post-industry and naturethrough a gentle design method. The program attempted to use abandoned industrial land as a special landscaperecourse, applying into modern tourism district landscape design. It explored howtourism landscape can be generated and presented in the background of abandonedindustry area based on the analysis of geological conditions, spatial structure, toursafety, tour experience and other aspects.
