Research Of Architectural Design Management For Large Scale Public Buildings

China has experienced a period of rapid developing of urbanization inrecent ten years, with its major cities competing to build various large-scalepublic construction projects. However, many of these projects wereimplemented in haste with insufficient design stage, along with loose designquality control and design management, eventually resulted in numerousproblems during later construction and operation stages, causing severe losses toconstruction companies and owners.This article focused on the current design and management problems oflarge-scale public building projects in China, using Tianjin prosperity4#projectas a study case, providing conclusions on the characteristics of design andmanagement of large-scale public buildings. Three advanced management toolsand their usages were introduced, including BIM (Building InformationModeling), collaborative design, as well as process management.Practical results shown that BIM can solve complex problems that beyondthe capability of traditional two dimensional blueprint, such as overlapping ofpipelines, or conflicts of pipeline and beam. Collaborative design can coordinateall aspects of design processes and minimize the design workload, which helpachieving high efficient designs and high standard quality controls. Processmanagement can provide good control during each stage and ensure thesuccessfully implement of all aspects of plan.In conclusion, BIM, collaborative design and process management areeffective methods to improve the design and management standards oflarge-scale public building projects, which help controlling the design qualityfrom three different aspects. A comprehensive combination of the three methodsis an efficient approach towards solving the complex design and managementproblems during large-scale public building projects.
