Power cables are broadly applied in electrical systems including electric power,construction, communication, manufacturing and so on. It is closely related to thenational economic development. In order to improve the reliability of power systemand avoid the grid failures, timely and correctly collecting information of powercables running state is important to power grid and improving reliability and safety ofthe power grid.XLPE cables, as the main products of high voltage cables, have been widelyused. Online monitoring of XLPE cables and understanding the potential risks inoperation, as well as grasping the operation status of equipment can facilitate thereduction of power grid accidents that caused by emergencies, and improve thereliability of power grid. Aiming at XLPE cables’ partial discharge and temperaturemonitoring, an XLPE cable on-line monitoring system was built and applied topractical power engineering. The research work mainly includes:(1) On the basis of the investigation of XLPE cable defects during manufacturing,installation, operation process, the typical defects in practical production can bedetermined. Then the typical defects of XLPE cable were simulated and the typicaldefect models were built.(2) Based on the circuit model of the XLPE cable partial discharge, the XLPEcable PD on-line detection system was built; all the typical cable fault models wereverified on PD acquisition circuit.(3) Establishment of XLPE cable PD on-line monitoring system, including:selection of the collection and transport loop of the XLPE cable PD detection system;determining the working standard of XLPE cable distributed optical fiber temperaturemeasurement system; analysing the requirement of XLPE cable multi parameteronline monitoring system, and developing the corresponding monitoring software.(4) Applied the on-line monitoring system to the actual220kV high-voltage cablelines, and built an online monitoring system that integrates the monitoring of PD andtemperature. Remote access and monitoring of the online data provides technicalsupport for the technicians to analyze the cable operation state in real time.
