With excellent insulation properties, good electrical properties and simple production process, XLPE cable is playing an increasingly role in the city’s power gird construction. Therefore, XLPE cable insulation condition is directly related to the region’s economic development and people’s daily lives. Routine preventive tests can not reflect the real situation of the cable insulation. Meanwhile, it will spend a lot of manpower, material and are more likely to accelerate cable aging. This paper has developed an on-line monitoring system which applies to the medium voltage XLPE cable on partial discharge to analysis insulation abnormal condition, judge discharge styles and prevent breakdown in time.This paper introduces the hardware and software architecture of the on-line monitoring system. The entire system is composed of the sensor, pre-filter amplifier module, multi-channel data acquisition module, the local server and remote system in five parts, which transfers the processed signals to a remote monitoring center for expert diagnosis. It is helpful to handle the real-time cable operating conditions and prevent potential risks of insulation deterioration.Finally, the paper describes the monitoring system on-site installation. Currently, the system has been running well and qualifying the substation testing requirements.
