With the globalization development of technology and economic, more and more attention has been paid to the studies of reverse engineering technology, which as a design methods for digestion and absorption of advanced design concept. The main research content of reverse engineering based on physical product is reconstruct CAD model, and the CAD model is the foundation of modern product development, manufacturing, redesign and repair broken parts. Then, based on the actual products reverse engineering is not only an important design methods, such as aerospace and automotive design industry, and also have an important role in conservation, damage repair and remanufacturing parts.Reconstruct accurate and efficient CAD model is the main purpose of reverse engineering based on physical products, which its core is reverse modeling techniques. Now, different feature extraction and final modeling results based on the CAD model reconstruction process can be divided into two types of reverse modeling techniques: surface reconstruction and solid reconstruction. Reverse modeling based on surface reconstruction method is a traditional reverse modeling method that relatively developed early, the reconstructed result of this method is surface model, and it is limited when used in CAD model reconstruction based on re-design, CAE structural simulation analyzes and other restrictions. And the method by extracting the surface features to reconstruct the CAD model, that can’t accurately reflect the relationship between certain geometric constraint rules between features, and characteristics at the time of reconstruction of mechanical parts geometry.Therefore, this paper focused on the defects of reverse modeling method based on surface reconstruction, and the research focus of reverse modeling method based on solid reconstruction has been studied and described in detail. This method can recognize and extract solid feature or indirectly extract related elements and use forward modeling methods to reconstruct solid feature, from treated triangular mesh model. In addition, it also can edit parameters for solid features to accurately define the features’geometric parameters and their constraints. This paper proposed a reverse modeling method for incomplete data by the function of feature identification and extraction in solid model reconstruct method, and an incomplete triangular mesh model of mechanical parts was taken as an example, the modeling process and the characteristics of the specific methods were introduced and validation analysis.Another part of the work of this paper is for the complex mechanical parts in the aerospace industry, that can’t be applied single reverse modeling method to reconstruct its exact and effective CAD model, and then proposed the reverse modeling method based on extract surface features and solid features. This method is a useful attempt in combination with various reverse modeling software platform on the reconstruction of complex industrial products CAD model.
