| Chinese society transformed in modern period with economic mode change as the first step, which lead to a series changes from the social structure, to the family and lifestyle changes, while housing as living space is in the transition. This paper studies the changing characteristic of the single building and the courtyard space, along the line of the inheritance and transition of traditional housing of Cicheng from year of 1820 to 1920.With the perspective of sociology, the spatial variation has relation to the modern social change, especially on the level of Chinese clan and family. The social consciousness, family organization, living habits and behavior as well as the lifestyle are the most obvious factor which increase the urban density, household acceleration, family miniaturization,etc. All these changes can cause specific space change. Second, the traditional space is being discussed from three aspects:structural framework, single building and courtyard, to study the variation of the basic-unit. On the basis of such study, the real cases in Cicheng and Ningbo are being analyzed separately in two parts. One is study of the single building variation and the other is of the courtyard organization. Finally the characteristics of the modern transition are summarized and presented by graphic analysis.Although the paper is a kind of historical study on the transition of traditional house under the process of modernization, the author is with a hope to provide a valued idea and design method for the contemporary rehabilitation with protection of traditional urban fabric and housing. The paper consists of five chapters:The first chapter is introduction which introduce the research purpose and meaning of this paper as well as the scope of the research objects and the method.The second chapter discuss the factors which affect the traditional living space from the perspective of sociology. The changes of the living behavior will be reflected in the corresponding living space. The typological analysis and expression of single traditional building is discussed in third chapter. A single building of three bays with corridor space is defined as the basic unit. It changes in three directions and forms five main types.The fourth chapter focus on typological analysis and expression of courtyard organization. The single courtyard enclose from the single building and the yard. And with the extension of vertical and horizontal, the courtyard complex is spatially organized. At the same time, the plot has tend to divide the courtyard.The whole thesis contains about 31000 words,69 pictures and charts. |
