Highway is a kind of linear structure that builds in natural environment directly; there has various relationships of itself and the circumstance around it. In Chongqing area, the hypsography is large and the climatic environment is complex, besides, there has remarkable zonal difference between them, which has great influence on highway engineering construction.The aim of research on natural zoning for Chongqing highway is making the construction of highway to fit local natural environment better and guaranteeing to adjust engineering technical measures according to local conditions in the program, design, construction and maintenance of highway.Based on the basic theories, principles, methods of general physic geographical regionalization, this paper widely referenced research experience and technology achievement of internal and international different regionalization cases. The Chongqing provincial scientific research achievements of physical geography and highway construction were also investigated and collected in detail. According to the correlative technological standards and statute files of highway construction, we established technological scheme of Chongqing provincial highway natural zoning research, built the category system of the natural zoning. Then the principles and methodologies were founded for the natural zoning, which mainly included whole principles and methodologies, regionalization principles and methodologies, primary guideline for regionalizing, regionalization units and degree system, and map compilation methodologies. Based on the principles, this paper established:Landform regionalization of Chongqing highway; Climate regionalization of Chongqing highway; Rock-Soil regionalization of Chongqing highway; Hydrology regionalization of Chongqing highway; Geological hazards regionalization of Chongqing highway; Different soil group EO value recommended table in second-level zoning and Natural regionalization of Chongqing highway. We also established Geographical Information system on natural Regionalization of Chongqing highway for the first time.Because of this research takes the theory and methods of Geographical Information System, it can quantify the geographical factors more accurate, and understand the influence of natural environment on highway clearer. This paper also finished the geographic information systems, which including basic data and zoning structure, the adoption of the zoning system can also adjust and optimize the results. The result of this paper has a positive assist to Chongqing Highway construction and is a good reference to highway natural zoning of other parts.
