Cascaded multilevel medium voltage inverter has been the mainstream in domestic variable frequency device system, as its mature technology and good compatibility. The high voltage output of cascaded multilevel medium voltage inverter is realized by put multiple -bridge inverter power module in series. H-bridge inverter power module is the core component of the medium voltage inverter.The current power module mentioned in this paper was introduced several years ago; its performance cannot catch the modern products. In this paper, a new power module with laminated busbar for 200A cascaded multilevel medium voltage inverter is designed to be the successor of current one.In this paper, the design process of new power module is explained in details, including the theoretical analysis of power semiconductors, parameters calculation, model selection and validation; design, calculation and validation of other components of the power module; structural design and modeling; thermal modeling and validation; and parasitical parameters extraction in the circuit using simulation software.The new designed power module and current module the dissipation are calculated in the paper, the thermal model of each are established and analyzed. The electromagnetic model of each busbar is also established to extract the parasitic parameters.The new power module in this paper utilized laminated busbar, new generation of power semiconductor, heat pipe heat sink and etc., together with the help of simulation software, making the new module’s parasitic induction 74.2% off, thermal safe tolerance 230% more, total power dissipation 22.8%, air volume 40%, volume 18.5%, comparing with the current one. The new module has a higher reliability, lower operation cost, and more flexible installation.This paper proved the new module designed here could meet the design and work requirement by calculation and simulation, and proved it to be a proper successor of current one by comparison.
