Local Public Archives is the physical location where accumulation of historical records of human society are kept, and the witness of social, cultural, scientific and technological development of the society. It is the most fundamental task for an Archives to select the usually unique and unpublished records to preserve permanently and physically, but more and more critical to provide to the public the historical records naturally and necessarily generated as accurate information. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the public service function and space for the purpose in archives and present a case study of An County Archives from architectural design to construction.This thesis uses the An County Archives and other cases to study the architectural design and the space for public services in archives. We first started with the historical origin and development of records and archives, the current status of the functions of archives with an analysis of the differences between archives in China and abroad, and proposed the importance of social services of archives in providing accurate historical information to the society and the needs to have service space in new archives. Secondly, we discussed from architectural design point of view the construction of archives’ site selection, overall layout, as well as the functional spaces in an archives and its landscape design. Lastly, we presented a case study on the architectural design and the proposed public service space in An County Archives.
