The aim of this paper is to investigate the behaviors of pounding of adjacent buildings of unequal floor height under earthquake, and that of adjacent buildings in a row. Hence, the following researchs are carried on:(1) The existing analytical methods used to model dynamic impact problem, involving the steromechanical approach, the lagranger multiplier method and the contact element approach, are summarized and the advantages and disadvantages of various methods are discussed.(2) Employing the substructures in the pounding area, the analytical model of adjacent buildings with unequal story height is established. The dynamical equations for pounding are derived, and the corresponding computer programs are compiled.(3) Based on analytical model, the inter-floor pounding responses of adjacent buildings with unequal story height are investigated. The corresponding parametrical studies are conducted and influence rules are concluded. The results show that the influences of inter-floor pounding in adjacent buildings on main structures are smaller than those of floor pounding. But the damages on pounding area are quite large. Moreover, the period ratio of structures, the initial gap, the pounding location, the stiffness of the substructure and the mass of the substructure has remarkable influence on responses of inter-floor pounding.(4) Applying nonlinear Hertz-damp model in the pounding point, the analytical model of adjacent buildings in a row is established. The dynamical equations for pounding are derived, and the corresponding computer programs are compiled.(5) Pounding response of 3,4, and 5-story adjacent buildings in a row has been investigated in this paper. The corresponding parametrical studies are conducted and influence rules are concluded. It has been shown that the influence on the end building can be larger in adjacent buildings in row pounding case when compared to a two buildings pounding case. Morever, the influence improves with the number of stories increased. The pounding response of the central building is even smaller then the seismic response due to the bilateral collisions. Moreover, the period ratio of structures, the initial gap, and the system configuration has remarkable influence on responses of inter-floor pounding.
