In 2013, the world’s first 18000TEU super large twin-propeller twin-rudder container ship, which was called as 3E class ship, was put into use. In the pursuit of economic interests, people at the same time pay more attention to the social benefits and environmental benefits. The paper has accomplished the following work:Based on the MMG modeling ideas,this paper analyses the hull, rudders, propellers and the outside distractions separately, establishes a mathematics model of large twin-propeller twin-rudder ships. The model also considers the shallow water and the low-speed field.The above established mathematical model is verified via comparing the simulation results and the real ship’s turning test curve.Based on the established model, the paper makes a study on different kinds of large twin-propeller twin-rudder ships’ maneuverability. And according to the simulation results, the breadth ratio (L/B), block coefficientCb, revolution speed of propeller n, propeller type,rudder area ratio AR/(L* d) are analysed and studied for their effects on the vessel’s maneuverability.This paper establishes the model of the large twin-propeller and twin-rudder ships berthing alongside the harbor. Under the influence of wind and current, the large twin-propeller twin-rudder ships’ berthing characteristics are studied and the simulation is realized. Based on the simulation results, the horizontally berthing plans of a large twin-propeller twin-rudder ship under different wind and current conditions are studied and the concrete berthing schemes are given.The research on the super large twin-propeller twin-rudder ship’s mathematical model and the simulation of ship’s maneuverability can enhance the safety of the ship’s ocean navigation and make the best use of its maneuverability.
