With the rapid development of China’s economy, the opening of the highway mileage is also rapid growth, accompanied by an increase in traffic accidents on the highway. Among them, there are a considerable number of accidents caused by bad weather. Fog known as "killer" on the highway, because in the early morning, drivers feel slack and fatigue, and fog appeared very suddenly in small-scale area, which is difficult to be forecast or detected. It makes difficult to grasp the road condition, resulted in massive pile-up. Research of this paper is to address this issue.This paper aims to solve the problem of highway safety caused by fog which is a strong localized low visibility weather. System consists of several visibility detector placed along the highway. Wireless sensor networks are used as a means of communication, and the collected data is uploaded to the local control center through the main controller. According to road management practices, visibility is the main reference index of road management decisions. Therefore providing visibility in the fog region for the traffic management department, it can help managers make the right decisions.The system does not use the traditional wired communications. It intrudue wireless technology into the system to achieve interoperability within the region, which reduce communication costs.In addition, the system include additional vehicle detectors in the fog region to provide a vehicle driving condition for administrators, as many accidents are caused by fog that there are much more different speed between the front and rear of the vehicle.According to the actual speed, administrator can make different management strategies.The system uses wireless sensor networks to replace the traditional wired technologies. On the basis of achieving the basic network functions, this paper studies the problem of wireless network security based on ZigBee technology. Wireless network security is a very popular topic, and applied to the field of highway safety wireless networks pay more attention to the security of communication. This system demonstrate the safety of the ZigBee technology in the device management, security, encryption and other point of view. And targeted to the experimental test results show that the correct configuration using ZigBee technology can effectively ensure the security of wireless communications.Finally, after a series of tests and verifications, the system has a high feasibility with the value of further applied in practice.
