With the development of technology, the electric power is used widely in the society due to the benefit of clear and convenient. The applied extent and the covered coverage of electric power have been regarded as a significant symbol of comprehensive national strength and development lever of country’s economy. Electric power is also the commodity which is closely bound up with human’s production and life. So power quality and reliability is the basis of protection for producing, national development and human’s life. The impact of mass non-linear, impacting and heavy load applied and the influence of some environmental factor such as weather, terrain bring new challenges to the stability and reliability of the power system. Line fault has become one of main problems which affect the stability and reliability of power system now.Detecting fault location timely and accurately can not only reduce a great number of economic losses, but also decrease the time and wasting which are used to detect the fault position. This paper will start from the research of fault location at home and abroad, and then analysis the reason of line short circuit fault. The emphasis is the research to the fault location which is caused by phase-to-ground fault. The main research achievements are as follows:(1)This paper presents a transmission line fault location detection method based on transient current. In the method, firstly, filter out the fundamental frequency component of the current signal when the voltage sags happen. Secondly, change the processed current signal into absolute value. Then, dispose the current signal by logarithmic transformation. Finally, after the logarithmic transformation, detect the transmission line fault location by mean of the data. Simulation results show that the method using transient current has the prospect of feasibility.(2) This paper designs a fault location system based on DSP TM320F2812. This system is composed of fault location devices based on DSP, wireless communication units and host computers. It can automatically select the fault location algorithm according to the duration of fault. The main functions include fault alarming and recording waveform, detecting fault location, wireless transmission, viewing history fault information and so on. This system will be an effective tool for detecting fault location and fault analysis.
