Although the rapid development of transportation technology has brought about the great leap forward of economy, it also has lead to such problems as traffic congestion, etc. Traffic congestion intensifies the contradiction between transportation and energy as well as environment, which would affect the high-speed development of the city and people’s quality of life to a large extent. Therefore, studying and designing high-efficiency area traffic signal control methods has great significance in achieving optimal control of urban transportation, increasing the operational efficiency of intelligent transportation system, and easing the traffic congestion.Aiming at solving such practical transportation problems as traffic congestion and low traffic capacity, this paper puts forward an area traffic signal control methods based on short-term traffic states prediction, and mainly focuses on short-term traffic flow prediction methods, short-term traffic state recognition methods, traffic control sub-area automatic division methods and area traffic signal control methods and strategies. Main content is as follows:1. Put forward a short-term traffic flow prediction method based on Trigg-Leach model. Firstly, the paper analyzes short-term traffic flow parameters, acquisition technology and related properties; then, it proposes Trigg-Leach model from industry forecast into short-term traffic flow prediction with calibrating corresponding traffic flow parameters and applies it to practical transportation engineering through tracking signals continuously modifying prediction parameters.2. Put forward a short-term traffic state recognition method based on data preprocessing. Firstly, the paper summarizes the current research of traffic state recognition methods, and designed traffic state recognition technical route. Then, by way of historical traffic flow data with high and low flow threshold value, it proposes a traffic state determination method for an isolated intersection, which can reduce the overall number of traffic states through eliminating redundant rules. Finally, it sets the template of traffic state-signal cycle used for designing signal timing plan.3. Put forward a traffic control sub-area automatic division method based on combination of static division and dynamic division. Firstly, the paper designs traffic control sub-area division strategy. Then, it proposes traffic control sub-area static division method according to maximum-minimum principle of neighboring intersection separation distance. Finally, it proposes similarity computation method for adjacent intersections, and this method can divide dynamically traffic control sub-area by combining the traffic state similarity and signal cycle similarity.4. Put forward an area traffic signal control method and strategy. Firstly, this paper puts forward definition and selection methods of key intersection and main lines respectively. Then, it designs the construction, function module and control strategy of the area traffic signal control system. Finally, it proposes an adaptive control method for isolated intersection based on the signal cycle and the green split small pace distance adjustment, and proposes an adaptive control method for arterial based on solution selection and candidate selection, this method can realize area traffic signal control strategy and l.
