In the power system,distribution network as a direct link to electricity user,It has the complexity and flexibility of network characteristics,these characteristics are determined by the wide variety of wiring and the frequency of user access and cut out.With the development of socio-economic and the rapid growth of urban power load. The requirements of the electricity user for the power quality and supply reliability are becoming more and more strict. The automation technology of distribution network also has a larger development. The fault location is one of the key technologies. Timely and accurately locate the fault point is one of the important work to solve the above requirements. with the application of the FTU and fault indicator terminal equipment, there are also appeared a lot of algorithm the fault location of distribution network, In many algorithms, matrix algorithm because of its intuitive and a small amount of calculation, has been widely studied. Therefore, the study of the distribution network fault location has important significance to the location of distribution network fault, improve the quality of power supply and reduce outage times.This paper has studied the distribution network structure and connection mode,and build distribution network fault location model. This model is constructed based on the characteristics of the distribution network and retain the switch and line. This matrix algorithm is improved on the basis of the existing fault location algorithms. The switch of the network and feeders are unified number, the distribution network structure is divided into zones, proposed matrix algorithm based fault over current degree. When the distribution network failure, we can estimate the sector of failure occurred by calculating the various segments of the fault over current. The algorithm is applicable to multiple failures and distribution network in various sectors. During fault location, it is no need to distinguish the location of the fault, and it is harmonized on the criterion. In order to achieve unity matrix fault location algorithm, this paper combined the applications of the terminal equipment and malfunction indicator of distribution network, and proposed a three-layer network communications scheme of the system constituted by the master station and fault passage indicator and terminal device. The program of the fault location is divided into two steps: the level fault location and the secondary fault location. The fault location scope is narrowed and more precise.
