| As the primary medium of shaping construction space, delivering architecture design and expressing emotion and life, construction material is a combination of technique and artistry in the development and application of architecture design.Nowadays, the multi-dimensional development of architecture and its changeful design styles call for innovation and reform of traditional architecture materials which need new techniques and novel ideas. This thesis discusses the broad application and potential of copper, including its distinctive artistic expression, profound cultural connotation and environmental friendly attribute, in architecture design. In the language of architectural design, innovative materials cover the following two aspects: one is to keep exploiting new materials and to seek new ways to apply. The second is to innovate traditional construction materials and to combine with updating technology and new techniques. Many traditional materials and craft practices can produce good results in modern buildings, such as copper and bronze crafts. Such materials applied to modern design techniques can often achieve unexpected results. As a traditional building material, copper has a long history.Although the copper itself has many advantages, but it is not common in modern architectural design application.Compared with foreign theoretical and pragmatic level of copper application in architecture, there is a big gap. In China, although copper has unique historical and cultural attributes, and contains cultural connotation, apart from some antique buildings, it is rarely applied to construction, especially to modern ones. The significance of the research and discussion of copper’s application lies in broadening designers’ mind in applying copper to architectural design and artistic expression. In this paper, the study object is copper’s artistic expression in the architectural design which includes the artistic expression, the artistic formation and its cultural characteristics of copper in architecture design. The thesis highlights copper’s unique material features and copper construction’s time memory. Combined with case study,it comes to a conclusion that the copper meets eco-development demand as a green material, conveys construction’s emotion as a cultural carrier, reaches aesthetic requirements as a component element. The full text is divided into six chapters, the first chapter talks about the origin of the thesis, including research background, purpose and its significance, introduces the research content, framework and research methods, and finally comes to the research object-- copper and its history and culture. The second chapter, from the perspective of the artistic expression language of copper, describes the relationship between materials and constructions as well as the basic attributes of copper and copper alloys. This chapter focuses on copper’s aesthetic value and its unique material language from four perspectives: “qualityâ€, “colorâ€, “shapeâ€, and “emotionâ€.The third chapter discusses the copper artistic expressions in architectural design, introduces construction art, and copper’s artistry presentation on curtain wall, roofing, building component and so on.The fourth chapter describes the architectural and cultural characteristics of copper. Copper buildings reflect religious culture. And a key characteristic of the copper is its time response which expresses architecture’s time memory. The fifth chapter analyzes with examples of copper application in architectural design, highlights the artistic expression of copper material language and describes the advantages and features of copper from different angles.Ecological issues have become the most important and unavoidable hot topic, research in this field will completely change our design concepts. People’s environment protection consciousness is enhanced. To build a green building will be the new architectural design challenge we will face in the near future. The final chapter features copper’s recyclability, highlights its broad prospects and distinctive advantages in future construction which follows the social trend. |
