Rutting on asphalt pavement is one of the premature damage in highway in our country, which has seriously affected the road smoothness, the passenger’s comfort as well as vehicle safety. To predict the rutting formation and evolution accurately turns to be the most important part in pavement design. The traditional studies on rutting calculation is based on the layer strain and viscoelastic theory, which ignore the effect of plastic deformation on rutting and is inconsistent with the actual situation. So, to analyze the pavement rutting using nonlinear visco-elastic-plastic constitutive relation is quite necessary. Using the data of a highway test section in Hebei Province, the permanent deformation value was simulated and calculated by finite element program ABAQUS in this thesis. The main content and conclusions are summarized as follows:(1) The introduction briefly describes the mechanism and failure types of the asphalt pavement rutting. The chapter two analyzes the merits and demerits of the mechanical models and puts forward two kinds of representative asphalt mixture. The model can not only describe the deformation characteristics of asphalt mixture, but also determine the parameters as well as make numerical calculation conveniently.(2) Using ABAQUS finite element software to establish road model to simulate the formation of ruts. The chapter three introduces the calculation principle of asphalt pavement rutting, including finite element equations and nonlinear constitutive model equations. In order to analyze the permanent deformation of asphalt pavement(3) Based on Burgers viscoelastic constitutive relation, the rutting is calculated in chapter four. Burgers model’s parameters are determined by the data obtained from creep experiments, which should be transferred into Prony series. Asphalt pavement rutting is simulated by finite element software ABAQUS and analyzed the process of permanent deformation on the pavement under cyclic loading. At last, this chapter studies the influence of temperature and overload on asphalt pavement rutting deformation.(4) Based on visco-elastic-plastic relation, rutting of asphalt pavement is calculated in chapter five. The viscoelastic plastic of surface layer is defined by the data obtained from the creep and uniaxial compression test. Other layers of the road can be defined as elastic. The asphalt pavement rutting is simulated by finite element software ABAQUS and analyzed the influence of temperature and overloading on it.At last, this chapter makes the comparison of the result of Burgers model and visco-elastic plastic constitutive relation.
