As the problems such as urban traffic congestion, energy consumption andenvironmental pollution are becoming increasingly prominent, prioritizing thedevelopment of public transport is being paid more and more attention by countires allaround the world. The bus rapid transit system, with characteirstics of flexibility andlow construction cost featured by bus transit, is broadly used worldwide. Since2004,bus rapid transit has developed rapidly in Chinese cities and most cities have putforward the bus rapid transit network operation plan. However, under the currentcondition that the bus rapid transit network has not been built, the bus could notcoordinate well with bus rapid transit,especially on the aspect of network coordinationin two transport modes. In order to flilly exert the dominant role bus plays, to providethe bus rapid transit feeder bus service and to cultivate the passenger flow of bus rapidtransit, it is necessary to carry out the research on bus network optimization for busrapid transit.This article begins with the compairson of bus rapid transit and bus,analyses thefunctional orientation and relation of the two transport modes and briefly introduces thebasic components of coordination. Then through three parts, i.e. the determination ofreasonable attraction scope, the adjustment of bus lines and the layout of new feeder buslines, the research on bus network optimization for bus rapid transit is carired out:putting forward a method to determine the reasonable attraction scope of bus rapidtransit towards bus, with the target of satisfying the interest of different proportion ofpassengers, based on the road network information on GIS and questionnaire of siteslayout, and launch the empirical study of Beijing South Central Axis bus rapid transitLine, in order to coordinate with the operation of bus rapid transit and increase theservice performance of bus rapid transit, provide the practical and operable bus lineadjustment method for bus rapid transit, including three steps, i.e. the current lineassessment, the current line classification and the implement of line adjustment, andlaunch the application example analysis so as to satisfy the need of passenger transport,build the feeder bus line layout model with the minimum total cost (including thepassenger travel time cost and line operation cost) being the objective function, designthe improved genetic algorithm to solve the model and apply it to the new feeder busline. At last, take the new feeder bus line to Beijing South Central Axis bus rapid transit Line as an example, determine the feeder bus line layout scope, select the feeder station,layout of the feeder bus line and propose the line layout scheme.
