With the development of social economy, our country’s road mileage and motor vehicle ownership increase year by year. Due to the increasing trend of the road traffic accident frequency, traffic safety has aroused widely attention among people. Within all kinds of traffic accidents, the rear-end collision is one type of the most severe. How to keep safe distance to avoid the happening of the accident is a key problem need to be solved to guarantee driving safety in the study. As we all know vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are becoming a rather effective way to increase the traffic safety and comfort. The inclusion of the radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to VANETs architecture could be conductive to improve the overall performances of the network and enable the development of interesting new services. This thesis mainly studies the use of RFID-VANETs technology to realize a car-following system in order to ensure driving safety and avoid the occurrence of the rear-end collision. This thesis first introduces the related research works in the field of RFID technology applied in traffic area and emphatically elaborates the necessity and innovation of the research on the RFID system. Then introduction of the application in the VANETS, the architecture of RFID systems on roads and the key technology of car-following rear-end collision avoidance are presented. In order to improve the driving safety and reduce the cost of the deployment, this thesis proposes a vehicle distance measurement and maintenance system based on RFID technology (RDMMS) within the minimum car-following system with only two vehicles included. In this system, RFID tags are deployed in the road surface providing traffic information to the vehicles equipped with RFID readers. Inspired by the observation that the information of the front vehicle stored in the tags has obvious temporal property, we exploit Time Series Forecasting Method to predict the driving status of the front vehicle and estimate the vehicle road distance. The predicted and estimated results are jointly considered with the current statement to adjust the velocity for the assurance of driving safety.Meanwhile, considering the traffic safety requirements for vehicles driving in a queue, this thesis also puts forward a multiple car following collision avoidance system based on RFID technology. With the improvement of RDMMS and the combination with vehicle to vehicle communication technology, this system processes the information collected from both the RFID tags and the vehicle to vehicle broadcasting. A distributed collision avoidance system is designed regarding each vehicle as an equal and independent individual. Different processing modes are proposed corresponding to the source and type of the information, which are adapted to the needs of the overall safety and the rapid information transmission. Based on the safety of each minimum car-following system, the security of the whole queue is achieved.Extensive simulations are provided to simulate the car-following system based on RFID technology with two and multiple vehicles. The simulation results show that the proposed system on the basis of RFID-VANETs technology can be applied to multiple-car-following model with different driving conditions to ensure driving safety and avoid rear-end collision.
