Under present economic situation, the time-consumption for design and design quality of new products are critical for manufacturing enterprise to be competitive in the marketplace. Reducer is a common mechanical transmission system which structure is similar so that the design process is very repetitive. Traditional design deeply relies on the experience of designers and large numbers of the design handbook. Especially when similar products are designed, there is a lot of workload due to the repeated calculation and modeling, seriously affecting product design quality and efficiency. Developing a CAD system which integrates the knowledge and experience of designers, realizing parametric and intelligent design is an effective method to realization of rapid design for enterprise.In this paper, the problems which existed in the practical work of designing the cylindrical gear reducer have been analyzed, including imperfect information sharing, transmission of design alteration not in time, low design efficiency and so on, and based on the theory of the top-down design and the support of optimization technique, the functions including reducer type design, gear geometric calculation, assembly draft design, shaft detailed design and assembly design have been developed in details. The function modeling and assembly models have been formed with the parametric technology, the design of sub-assembles has been accomplished with the TBS modeling techniques and the method of combination of layout sketches and framework model and the entire system have been designed with the parametric modeling method. According to the fact that engineering drawing is the important document for the design of reducer, the adjustment of engineering drawing has been analyzed and researched and the dimension of part drawing and assembly drawing could be adjusted automatically with dimension-driven technology. Based on the parametric design method, reducer3D Design System which integrates the design standard of enterprise and the experience of the designer has been developed with SolidWorks2011as secondary development platform, C#as development of language and XML as database, meeting the enterprise’s requirement of design reducer with high quality and high efficiency.At present, through the implementation of the system in the enterprise for half a year, the reducer design efficiency is improved, the research in this paper is an exemplary for reducer design of other manufacturing enterprises.
