Steering system design is one important part of racing car design. The driver drives a car mostly by steering system which makes it influence the performance of the whole car directly. This thesis researches the design method and optimizes the steering system of FSAE racing car based on Yundian of Hefei University of Technology. Virtual model is built to judge the performance of steering system by simulation.This thesis analyzes the difference of steering between racing car and common car and sets a series of design goals and progress based on committee rules and steering system requirement. Determine the type of steering gear by comparison of various types of steering characteristics. Calculate the performance parameter and load parameter. Design kingpin parameter based on handiness and aligning. Design tire parameter based on tire wearing. Based on Ackermann steering theory considering slip angle, analyze the characteristics of FSAE car steering trapezoid quantitative by the introduction of vertical load redistribution influence for tire slip stiffness and slip angle when high speed cornering. Establish the steering angle equation within the percent of Ackermann as objective angle equation. Optimize the steering trapezoid according to actual angle relation. According to the principle of minimum interference when suspension and steering linkage moves optimize the layout of them.This thesis builds the virtual model of steering system and full vehicle and analyzes how the parameter changes when tire bumps up and down. Steady cornering simulation is performed and evaluated by national standard and rules. Steering portability and aligning simulation are performed to evaluate the steering ability. The results show that the parameter changes a little and the performance of steering is excellent. This thesis provides a reference to future design of steering system for racing car.
