Fuel tank is one of the important safety components of automobile; its sealing is a key factor in tank that should be considered in the design and manufacture. At present, tank mainly divided into two classes:metal tank and plastic metal. At present common metal tank have two kinds of structure form, such as the head covers of both sides and the tank folded by top and bottom. At present, most of tank folded by top and bottom is still manual operation with the general welding seam welding equipment, the productivity is low, quality cannot be guaranteed, working environment is bad, and labor intention is great. So the study and design of automobile fuel tank automatic seam welding machine has a great meaning to improving the quality of the products and the production efficiency, reducing the labor intensity of workers.By analyzing the fuel tank seam welding process, this paper determined identified the main factors influencing the welding quality and production efficiency. And then, a special purpose automobile fuel tank automatic seam welding machine was designed and developed based on the specific condition of project cooperation enterprises.According to the characteristics of the material and structure of fuel tank, this paper analyses of the working process of the automatic seam welding machine and technology, determine the necessary modules, design overall layout of automatic seam welding machine, and the main mechanical structure Including welding platform and loading device design, type selection calculation and checking, etc. In the SolidWorks2011system, the3D solid models of each part of the automatic seam welding machine are established, and the virtual assembly is also completed, and the interference inspection and clearance shows that our design is reasonable and correct. The strength analysis of the clamping frame and fuel tank bracket, which is key part of the automatic seam welding machine, is carried out by finite element method software (ANSYS), and proved the framework intensity’s reliability.
