| The subject comes from the project of Nanjing Da Bao En Temple restoration studylead by Professor Wang Yongping. The Da Bao En temple was the royal temple building ofMing Dynasty, it’s the " highest level " of construction. The high status especially embodiedby the Porcelain Tower known as "the seventh wonder of the world". However, the towerwas ruined during the war between the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and the Qinggovernment. By the time the restoration of Porcelain Tower is completed, it will makefar-reaching impact on the history, both in home and abroad.This paper starts from the perspective of architecture, combined with graphic recordsin history and field research, dividing the restoration design of the Nanjing Da Bao EnTemple into three parts: historical research in ealier stage, existing historical sites, exampleanalysis and the restoration design of the temple and tower.The thesis is divided into seven chapters:The first chapter is an introduction. Proposing the overall vision of the background, thepurpose and significance of the research, as well as the framework, research methods andcontent.etc.The second chapter introduces the general concept of the Nanjing Da Bao En Temple.This chapter firstly discusses the political, economic, religious and cultural development ofearly Ming Dynasty of Nanjing. The emergence of a temple is by no means isolated, it isclosely linked with the historical background. Only by putting the Nanjing Da Bao EnTemple in the historical environment, can we better understand the construction anddevelopment process of it.The third chapter talks about the layout of the Nanjing Da Bao En Temple. It liststemples of the same period and the same scale to compare their plane and layout in order tosummarize the main characteristic of the large temples’ layout at that time. And then thethesis compares the result with the layout of the Nanjing Da Bao En Temple, so as to get the common ground between them, the recovery of layout will focus on these ommonalities.The fourth chapter introduces the present situation of the Nanjing Da Bao En Temple.After four years of hard work, Nanjing Museum has finished the first stage ofarchaeological excavations of the ruins. According to the results of the archaeological work,the paper gives a brief identification and analysis of the Nanjing Da Bao En Temple and thearchaeological relics unearthed.The fifth chapter describes the restoration design of the Nanjing Da Bao En Temple.The statement of the architectural design is made according to the current constructionscheme and the historical building form in Ming Dynasty.The sixth chapter displays the restoration design of the Porcelain Tower. The thesislists two famous pavilion-style tower of Ming Dynasty near Nanjing so that comparativeanalysis which will show us the constructional form and characeristics of the towers. Thenthe paper combines the results with the historical records of the Porcelain Tower tocomplete the restoration design.The last chapter gives the additional information of the development and applicationprocess of the coloured glaze of Ming Dynasty.
