Along with the unceasing improvement of the Internet of things technology andinfrastructure, the widespread connection created by Internet has extended to the fullinteroperability between object and object, people and people, people and objects. A wave ofintelligent products is sweeping the world. The purpose of designing and developingintelligent products is to make a reasonable allocation of resources and create a better livingenvironment for human beings. However, the current research on intelligent product mainlyfocus on technology and functionality. The use of new technology makes the workingprinciple of intelligent products more complex and cause more relevant factors. So we need amore comprehensive measure of scene, target user, interaction and many other factors tocreate better user experience when designing intelligent products. Therefore, it is of greatsignificance to introduce the thinking and methods of interaction design in the design ofintelligent products.As an integral part of interaction design, prototype is a vivid and specific description ofproduct concept. Designers can test and evaluate the design concept effectively throughprototyping. Prototype has been widely applied in the design process of virtual product suchas software and website. However, in the process of the intelligent product design, thetraditional ways of prototyping have many limitations and cannot meet the demand ofintelligent product design. Therefore, corresponding research should be taken according to thefeature of intelligent product.The target population of this subject is interaction designers and makers who buildintelligent product prototype. According to the comparison and analyses of several differentplatform, Arduino platform has been made as the foundation of the research. User researchhas been taken in both qualitative and quantitative ways to discover the difficulties andlimitations in the process of intelligent product prototyping based on Arduino. According tothe result of theoretical analysis and user research, some prototype design principles andstrategies for both hardware design and software design, which could be the reference for therelevant research and practice, have been proposed. In the last part of the subject, anintelligent product prototyping auxiliary platformμ called SMARduino has been built to helpusers applying the strategies to prototyping practice and improving the efficiency of buildingintelligent product prototype through Arduino. SMARduino provides support for the applyingthe thinking and method of interaction design in the process intelligent product design.
