Smart grid is developed to meet the needs of social development, which uses the existing communication technologies to provide a variety of services to address the various deficiencies existing in power grid nowadays. The wireless communication technologies used in smart grid are mainly including GSM, GPRS,3G, LTE, WLAN and some communication technologies based on the IEEE802.15.4standard. However, they also introduce security issues while promoting the development of the smart grid, so the smart grid needs security mechanisms to protect itself.Current wireless communication technologies such as LTE, WLAN and IEEE802.15.4have security mechanisms to protect themselves, when used in smart grid they can provide some protection, but the smart grid itself has a number of characteristics, which makes the existing security mechanism could not be fully applied, so it need a more suitable security mechanisms to meet the characteristics of smart grid. Based on the studies of the wireless channel characteristics we found that it can be used to designed security mechanism in smart grid to address the difficulties the existing security mechanisms faced, so we study the security enhancement technology based on the wireless channel characteristics, which aim to address the difficulties of traditional security mechanisms applying to smart grid. The main content of this paper and innovations are as follows:1. First we analyze the characteristics, QoS and security issues of smart grid, put forward the problem that smart grid need to solve when using security mechanisms.2. Second we analyze the existing security mechanisms, analyzes the difficulties when they are used in Smart Grid. 3. Then we research the wireless channel characteristics and analyze the existing physical layer security methods based on the wireless channel characteristics and their shortcomings so as to indicate that the smart grid need a better physical layer security approach to enhance security.4. Finally we design some security enhancement approaches which utilize the wireless channel characteristics. The approaches we designed are in TDD mode and FDD mode, the performance analysis of them are provided and we build a platform to verify them. Results show that the approaches are low complexity, low latency overhead and low signaling overhead, the secret keys it generated are high consistency and security, thus the approaches we designed can be used for smart grid security enhancement.
